Reborn in 1985: Taking Back My Life
Chapter 299: The Assistant Said in a Hushed Tone
"Mr. Stone, Kyle Blackwell has fallen asleep," the assistant said in a hushed tone as he pushed the door open.
Elena Ward stood up and retrieved an acupuncture kit from her bag. "Take me to him."
The assistant hesitated, glancing at Adrian Stone for approval—only the CEO had the final say here.
Adrian waved impatiently. "What are you waiting for? Take Dr. Ward!"
Once they left, Adrian's expression darkened. "Adrian, this involves our entire plan. Are you sure you want to tell Elena?"
Adrian Stone's gaze was resolute. "She's my wife."
"But this is classified business information!" Adrian loosened his tie irritably. "You know how troublesome The Blackwell family is. What if—"
"There won't be any 'what if,'" Adrian cut him off. "Elena is more reliable than you think. She saved my life—and yours."
Adrian fell silent. That mining accident—it was Elena who had pulled them both out in time.
"I'm just worried..." He sighed. "Once women know too much, they tend to—"
"She's different." Adrian's eyes softened. "She's never let me down."
Before Adrian could respond, the door opened.
Elena walked in, casually returning the acupuncture kit to her bag. "Done. He'll be up and about when he wakes."
Adrian checked his watch. "The Blackwell family will be here in half an hour. You two should leave first."
Adrian picked up Elena's coat and draped it over her shoulders, carefully adjusting her scarf. Adrian frowned—since when had the cold, ruthless man he knew become so attentive?
"We'll talk tomorrow." Adrian guided Elena toward the door.
Elena suddenly turned back, a sly smile playing on her lips. "Mr. Stone, don’t forget to make The Blackwells pay. After all..." She winked. "We did save their precious heir."
"You sure know how to bargain," Adrian scoffed.
"Takes one to know one." Elena laughed, linking her arm with Adrian's.
As they reached the lobby, they nearly collided with a father and daughter. The moment they passed each other, Elena felt a scrutinizing gaze.
Katherine Blackwell.
Those seemingly innocent eyes hid a viper's venom. Elena clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms.
Adrian sensed her tension and gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze.
Once in the car, Elena exhaled deeply. In the rearview mirror, Katherine Blackwell remained standing, watching their departure with a thoughtful expression.
"Does she suspect something?" Adrian asked.
Elena shook her head. "Just a woman's intuition." Her lips curled into a cold smile. "Soon, she'll learn what retribution feels like."
Adrian took her icy hand in his. "Patience. We'll take it slow."
The car disappeared into the night. Inside the building, Katherine Blackwell suddenly clutched her chest.
"What's wrong?" Frederick Blackwell frowned.
"Nothing." She forced a smile but couldn't resist glancing back one last time.
That stranger's gaze had unsettled her in a way she couldn't explain.
