His heart ached for his most outstanding son, yet he knew no one was more qualified than Adrian. If Adrian said he was ready, then he was. This trust stemmed from Adrian's exceptional military prowess.

"Nathaniel, it's too dangerous there! You—" Sylvia's mind was in turmoil. Adrian's deployment had upended her plans. With Valerie Mercer already at the base, she'd hoped to foster a relationship between them. But how could that happen if he wasn't even there?

"Put it down!" Nathaniel barked.

Sylvia's hand jerked, nearly dropping the receiver. In all their years of marriage, he'd never spoken to her like this.

"You're being foolish!" His gaze burned. "He's a soldier first. When the nation calls, he answers. If I recall him today, what stops others from demanding the same for their sons tomorrow?"

He took a deep breath. "I believe he'll return safely. This discussion is over. Don't bring it up again."

Sylvia paled. It was clear she couldn't stop this. She needed an exit strategy—before Adrian returned to settle the score.
